News for the week of 17-Nov-2008

by Carol Banks Weber

Brandon Barash (Johnny) appears in a meet and greet for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in West Hartford, CT’s West Hartford Meeting & Conference Center on 50 South Main St. The fundraising event will take place on December 21. For a $50 donation, attendees can enjoy brunch, too. But act fast with that $50, because there are only 100 available seats total. Check the MADDCONNECTICUT website for information on how to attend and the nearby hotels.

Carolyn Hennesy (Diane) is itching to go on book tours in the aftermath of the publication and successful sales of the first of her young adult series about a teenaged, mythic figure Pandy (who would grow up to be Pandora, of Pandora’s Box). Problem is, her Bloomsbury Children’s Books publisher (its marketing department, to be specific) has held off any book tour until the successful hardcover book is made into paperback. But, Hennesy explained, the Catch-22 part of this is that they can’t go into paperback just yet, not when “Pandora Gets Jealous” (and “Pandora Gets Vain”) is doing so well. Hennesy won’t second-guess her publishers, since they’ve been so successful with the “Harry Potter” series. A third in the Pandora series will come out next year in April. Besides enjoying her day in the sun as an author – she would like to work on novels for grown-ups next, in the sweeping gothic realm – Hennesy has been enjoying her pairing with gal pal Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) on-screen, her character’s unlikely romance with Max (she’d also go for Mac, Ric and Luke), and appearances in three distinctly different movies, with three unusual titles. Boob Jobs & Jesus follows a young female writer on a book tour (ironically enough), publicizing her semi-autobiography. The short film was produced, written and acted in by lead Ursula Whittaker, a friend. Necessary Evil sounds more mainstream, a thriller about evil in a government facility and a female reporter out to get the scoop on it, risking her life in the process. And, Shattered!, well, Hennesy couldn’t recall the synopsis of that one at the time of the Soap Opera Source interview [“A Sit Down With Carolyn Hennesy” by Jennifer Synder, news editor, November 8, 2008].

Brandon Barash (Johnny) finds immense pleasure in all of Halloween’s tricks, treats and traditions, including some middle school hijinks with shaving cream fights—a nifty way to meet chicks. He recalled a time once when he went into the Palisades neighborhood in California, and received king-sized candy bars from movie stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell—you know, instead of those miniatures. “From then on,” he said, “all I could think about was Goldie Hawn’s candy bars. Anything after that was a disappointment.” Unwrapped jellybeans were one type of candy Barash could’ve done without as a kid though, as well as worrying that his stash of candy was tainted by some nutcase dropping razor blades inside. –Soap Opera Digest, November 4, 2008

Mary Gross (formerly of Saturday Night Live) will appear as Nadine’s Aunt Raylene.

Gossip for the week of 17-Nov-2008

Here we go again. NBC’s primetime show, Lipstick Jungle, has been canceled. You know what that means. Brenda might come back to GH after all! Vanessa Marcil, Brenda’s portrayer, was set to co-star on that NBC primetime show, which would’ve effectively shut down any Brenda comebacks for the foreseeable future. Now that it’s done, here she is, ready to take Sonny away from Claudia, Kate and Carly.

Jax and Kate rebound from Carly and Sonny, with each other. Carly gets an eyeful. But then Carly can’t cry for long, because she may find another guy to love, a brand new guy without the Jax, Jason or Sonny baggage.

Sonny, you shot Karpov in cold blood about fifty million times, but you forgot to piss in his mouth. What kind of mobster are you?! For shame!

Head writer Bob Guza Jr. promised a big November Sweeps stunt, but then later said it would be pushed back a few months. Is this code for… new head writer? Maybe GH:NS head writer Sri Rao? Please?

Incredible. Guza writes another kidnapping plot device in, this time with baby Jake in peril, because of his dad – mobster Jason. I feel like I’m watching a rerun of all of Guza’s worst hits. Rumor indicates Elizabeth will claim she’s marrying Jason, so the Russian thugs will take her in the baby’s place. Meanwhile, Jason might like to renege on relying so much on Cody, who could be an operative for the government or spy for the other team.

Instead of allowing Genie Francis (Laura) to have real, substantive story with all of her on-screen loved ones, acquaintances and enemies… maybe even get to know some of the new kids in town, Guza & Co. once again misused and disrespected her as nothing but a youth demo and stunt prop. Laura really only shared scenes with Lulu, Luke, Tracy?, and Scott. Saying goodbye to the rest of her family in a blink back tears and you missed her fashion … doesn’t count. Don’t just take my word for it. Check out Daytime Confidential’s spoilers by Regan (Novemberr 14th update). She says the same thing. In Regan’s spoilers, she passed on the rumor that Laura will resurface come March, maybe in order to say goodbye to the town along with Luke.
