Dad will eat anything you put in front of him. He will also eat really, really odd combinations of food. If it's a leftover in the fridge, he might combine it with something else. He comes by this honestly; his dad, who was a young man during The Depression, would also eat anything and everything. At Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, after his kids were grown, Grandpa would attend the holiday meal and his offspring would carefully and proudly save him a turkey leg because they were his favorite. A few years before his death, Grandpa announced he doesn't actually like turkey legs. That shocked his kids...he always ate turkey legs and always grabbed for one when Grandma made a turkey dinner. Yes, Grandpa said...that's because none of YOU like turkey legs. If he didn't eat them, no one would.
Anyways...Grandpa once put tartar sauce on veal parmesan. Deliberately. I told Dad long ago to at least try to keep to the same spice palate when he sauces something up. Like, go ahead and put salsa or Frank's Thai Chili Sauce on your chicken parmesan (we don't do veal in this household...or at least I don't) but don't be topping it with mayo. Or tartar sauce.
