waiting to cross Flatbush Ave to Prospect Park. It was lightly raining and when the light turned green a pregnant woman stepped off first and a car couldn’t stop on time for their red light. I think he tried but skid into her. He stayed at the scene of the accident. The woman got hit hard enough to fly into the air and land on her unnaturally bent leg. I was right behind her so I got to her first. I sat down next to her and kept her calm while a human chain of NewYorkers formed to stop traffic and others stood above us with umbrellas until the ambulance got there. She was in the middle of a very busy street (Flatbush entering the Grand Army Plaza circle by Eastern Parkway) but we couldn’t move her. I was impressed by my fellow New Yorkers and their human chain.

I think people who have never lived here imagine us very differently. It’s an untrue stereotype.
