be like small towns inside the big city but with everything you need within walking distance. Iโ€™m lucky to live in a Brooklyn neighborhood and building with a strong sense of community. Many times when Iโ€™ve been struggling to carry packages home from the UPS store around the corner, some nice strong young man comes along and offers to carry them for me all the way into my lobby/elevator. I try to do my part. If I sit down on a park bench next to a lone elderly person, I strike up a conversation. By the time we part, some have told me that I made their day. They were just lonely and in need of a little human contact.

If we all lived like this, no matter where we live, the world would be a better place. Last night my sister was bringing some Chinese food to me. She got up one flight of stairs with it and a young woman coming down asked her what floor she was going to and carried it up for her. Seriously, there are so many little things that donโ€™t take much time or money that we can do for each other that can make a huge difference to someone.

I believe that the central struggle of the time we are living in is hanging onto our humanity.
