Yep, I admit I admire brevity in an author. Why use 4000 words when 1000 will do? It sometimes reminds me of those English classes in which you were required to write a report or essay of x number of words but you just didn't have enough to say about the book or the subject so you stretch it out with additional adjectives or you repeat points using different words. I'm not saying Snow Falling on Cedars reached this point but I *am* saying the book would've gotten a higher rating from me if it had wrapped up in 300 pages rather than 460 pages, or if more of those 460 pages were devoted to story rather than setting. But again, that's just me.
