Retcons are hit or miss.
I did enjoy Nikolas/Stefan at the time but looking back I get why L&L fans didn't like it since Laura acted like Nikolas never existed.
I get that! And Luke and Lucky were horrible to Nikolas who was only 16 years old and had no say in his procreation!
Would've made more sense if Laura thought Nikolas was dead and then found out he was alive.
They at least gave plausible reasons why she had to pretend. Laura tried to retrieve him twice:
~First he time after she left to see for herself Luke was alive she was told she forfeited any rights to her baby.
~Second time she convinced one of the nannies to bring Nikolas to the airport but Helena showed up instead and told her the nanny was dead and to give her incentive to stay away—“killed” Leslie in a car accident.
