there was a surprisingly good Vietnamese restaurant in Ashtabula. Ashtabula is about an hour away, and I usually get there maybe once a year either for the beach glass festival or just to go to their lovely beach...unsurprisingly, as Ashtabula is now populated mostly by skinheads and meth addicts, the Vietnamese restaurant is no longer. I still occasionally get a Vietnamese iced coffee at a (semi) local bakery.

I am sitting here at my desk last Friday evening, and our new IT AI chatbot pings me on Teams to ask if I am having a problem (I guess it's listening to me fussing at the laptop all the time LOL).

I then wrote it and described the problem I had been having - documents I'd saved not showing up as saved, etc.

And the AI understood me! Repeated the problem back to me and said - sounds like you're having a synching problem. Which is what I thought it was but didn't feel like calling IT.

And voila, they fixed it. Just like that. Less than 2 minutes.

But...as AI gets smarter and can actually understand what you're telling it, people will lose their jobs, and that makes me feel guilty that I used it. So, I'll need to just call IT next time.

Much AI is still stupid though. Try asking for information on assisted living and a lot of times it spits out info about nursing homes. Very different things!

I'm SO conflicted on my opinion of AI. I believe there's plenty of times where it's beneficial; you experienced one and I just saw a story on my phone about AI being able to detect pancreatic cancer sooner than doctors [link] But yes, it's putting people out of jobs, including a good friend of mine from college who had an editing job for years and now no longer does. There were other factors contributing to her unemployment--none her fault--but AI was the biggest one. I also worry about the amount of water needed to cool down the ginormous computers that are at the heart of AI. And yes, a lot of AI is used for stupid things like videos on TikTok or YouTube. Plus I'm tired of not always being able to immediately tell when a story is AI.
