by NY Times reporter Andrea Elliott. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction in 2022 but reads like a novel. It made me think of Barbara Kingsolverโs novel Demon Copperhead. Elliott followed a poor, homeless family for 8 years as they navigate through the various systems like shelters and child protective services. She covers the whole family but focuses on the oldest daughter, Dasani, who is 11 years old at the start of the book. The family is a married couple and their 8 children. It is clear that, whatever they are going through, this family loves each other.
The book is extremely well-researched and it is remarkable that this poor black family let this white journalist into their lives for 8 years.
If you like this kind of book, I highly recommend it.
