I liked NYPD Blue and felt like it was pushing the creative envelope for old network TV, which was a good thing IMO. It was an ABC show that started around the same time as Twin Peaks and China Beach, which were, IMO, along with NYPD Blue, some of ABC’s best shows ever. ABC must have had somebody good leading it during the period those three shows were produced. I think the only reason I stopped watching NYPD Blue was because I was in a particularly busy time of my life and didn’t have much time for TV then. I do remember thinking that David Caruso was an idiot for leaving the show so quickly .
