However, since he did say it/offend publicly, his reaching out/apology should have been also public. If the offense happens in private then the apology should also be private. If the offense happens in public then the apology should also be public. Saying you are mortified and making it all about yourself is not an apology. Period.
I frankly don't GAF about his past history. I, along with a whole lot of people who are not in the UK, are not aware of his history. I am sympathetic to his plight, but that does not excuse his lack of public apology. Apologizing for a past transgression does not give you future immunity.
