it does NOT have to be set to activate ONLY when the button is pushed.
I've had to do this same thing and I just went across the street, hit the button, said the Amazon man delivered your box to us, put the box on the doorstep and walked away.
there are a lot of folks out there these days who just don't want to people - they will never come to the door if someone is out there.
