The lack of subtitles was a huge point of frustration. I’ll try to fix that

This isn't a problem on Crave -- we just have subtitles.

before I watch episode 2.

I’m guessing that when Ilya was speaking to his father, he was getting the same kind of pressure to not mess his hockey career up and bring home the big money that Shane was getting from his mother about the Rolex endorsement deal.

Not exactly. Yuna is concerned with Shane representing Asian Canadians, and she's also trying to take care of the business side, but she isn't anything like Ilya's father, who I believe is telling his brand-new hockey coach that Ilya is lazy. Ilya then clarifies that he will work hard for the team and his father gets angry that he contradicted him.

Ah yes. I did get that Shane’s mom was “reminding” him of the importance of representing, which puts even more pressure on him to perform and succeed. Thank you for clarifying Illya’s conversation with his father. I did get, without understanding the words, that his father was unreasonably angry at his son who was performing well. Since I didn’t have subtitles. I read a recap of episode 1 after watching and the recap said Illya was talking to his brother on the phone, not his father. Not sure if that recap was wrong or if I misinterpreted those scenes.

And when speaking to the Montreal media in French, I’m guessing that Shane was saying the basic things that young athletes routinely say to the media. But it was a little frustrating not having subtitles for the Russian and French dialogue. I also couldn’t read whatever texting there was and didn’t care enough to pause and try to read the texts.

I'd pause to read the texts if you need to -- they're key information.

IIRC, there were only a few short texts in episode 1. What did I miss? I have no problem with subtitles but texts are always so tiny and quick. I’m not watching this alone so I didn’t grab the remote to pause it. Maybe I will for the next episode. LOL, they should subtitle the texts.

And yes, Shane is just talking about Ilya, I think, saying something like "I'm just trying to help the team" -- very polished, uncontroversial young athlete stuff.

I’ve watched enough sports to surmise that so that didn’t bother me as much as the unsubtitled Russian.

Overall, I’m not wowed by this show but it’s only 6 episodes so I’ll watch it to see where it goes. It probably doesn’t help that I don’t like hockey or techno music. So far, I’m not getting the hype.

Well. Plenty of us do. It's not going to be for everyone. I will say it builds -- but if it's not for you, it's not for you.

Clearly this show is a big hit in Canada but it’s also currently the #1 watched show on HBO Max. (The Pitt is #2 but will probably pop back to #1 since S2 starts tonight.) Heated Rivalry is a short time commitment so I’m going to stick with it and see if it grows on me. I don’t hate it. I just don’t see the big deal. Neither lead actor or character has wowed me. Did you see Fellow Travelers? I loved Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey’s romance in that. But it was a much more substantial story.
