It barely gave time to do anything else before the hiatus started.
The article isn't wrong tho. Unless your name is Dick Wolf or Ryan Murphy or you have a reboot idea, good luck getting anything on network TV these days. Also every network can't seem to think beyond cop show, firefighters, lawyers or hospital (in terms of dramas). Meanwhile, look at some of the biggest shows the past decade or two. "The Walking Dead" -- Horror. "Game Of Thrones" -- Fantasy. "Stranger Things" -- SciFi. Right now one of HBO's highest rated shows is "It: Welcome To Derry", a horror series. Cable and streaming aren't afraid to think outside the box and try different things.
Anyhow, I also miss longer seasons. Did that sometimes mean "filler" episodes? Yes, of course, but sometimes a filler episode is dang good. Nothing important happened in "Tricia Tanaka Is Dead" but every die hard LOST fan would say how much fun it was and how they enjoyed it.
