many businesses had enough sales to move from in the red to in the black. Technically, it (supposedly) originated with the cops in Philly back in the 1950s, who had to wrangle both crazed shoppers AND fans attending the Army-Navy game but retailers rebranded the term in the 1980s (interestingly, the retailers tried to rename the day "Buy Friday", but "Black Friday" stuck). In the 2010s, a rumor was started that Black Friday got its name because slaves were sold at half price the day after Thanksgiving, but there's no evidence of that, plus the term didn't take off until well after slavery was abolished.

I didn't know Walgreen's is now owned by the same folks who own Chico's. That doesn't bode well for their employees :-( We had two Walgreens near us close down; I thought one was doing a pretty good business but I guess I was wrong.
