by Ari Aster and gave me plenty to think about, as most Ari Aster films do. It takes place in New Mexico in May 2020 when the pandemic was in full swing. Joaquin Phoenix is terrific in the lead role of the sheriff who does not want to wear a mask. The whole cast is good and includes Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler and Deidre O’Connell. Thematically it explores how extremely divided we’ve become and technology’s role in creating echo chambers and extreme anxiety in a population that is constantly doomsday scrolling. Lots to think about and talk about. I often ask myself — why are so many people still so angry fives years post-pandemic? Why are so many people still in survival mode? Another good movie from A24.
