Oh, he's definitely homesick for his friends and likely for the life he knew. I wonder if Amira is as homesick for the life she left or if she's thoroughly "Canadian-ized" by now and thinks of Syria more as her culture rather than a beloved homeland.

A part of me has always felt like Bash would go back if he felt he safely could except for Amira. She was just a child and her main memories of Syria are probably war related which is traumatic for her. It's unlikely she has the positive memories and warm feelings that Bash does. Even any good memories of their parents is tarnished by knowing they were murdered by soldiers. I don't think she'd even entertain the idea of returning and Bash will never leave her, not until she's an adult standing on her own two feet.

So much THIS! SO many stereotypical characters and not quite enough nuance. So far, I feel like Bash is the only one who got any kind of positive character development...or maybe not even positive development as much as an explanation for why he is who he is (though both his medical skills and his compassion are pretty terrific).

The one-dimensional writing has been glaringly obvious this season. Theo is Angry White Man. Devi is Woman Only Guided By Her Emotions, Claire is Angry Addict, Novak is Brilliant Jerk Doctor, June is Cold Aloof Doctor, etc. Only Bash and Mags get some development and even then, not nearly enough for Mags. She's the Kind But Naive Doctor.

Yep. It feels like they repeatedly dropped the ball with her character, giving her little to no room to soften a little. I thought maybe her sister (half-sister?) showing up would've led us to a kinder, gentler June...I was wrong.

The whole sister storyline somehow made her even colder. Weird choice there.

I feel like in general, some brilliant doctors, especially male ones, can be pompous, arrogant jerks with a God complex...but if you're getting the job done, having a lousy personality shouldn't necessarily get you fired.

Exactly. Novak is the classic brilliant but arrogant surgeon. But the thing is, he's pretty good with patients and gets along fine with the others so it's not like everyone in the hospital is begging for him to go. Just let the man work. She doesn't have to invite him over for dinner and be his bestie. All she has to do is let him save lives.

And yes, I think you're correct in Devi coming across as a man-hater.

Which is a really unfortunate writing choice for a lesbian character and plays into a bad cliche. I remember a show once where the lesbian character was like "I get along just fine with men. It's straight women who seem to have the most issues with them". 🤣🤣

I found this quote from an article about the character's introduction--""She's the kind of character that we root for and that we like, but also brings change that affects everybody on our show," showrunner Joseph Kay explains to NBC Insider. "And so she's an interesting and antagonist in that way."--and I thought nope. I'm not rooting for her and I don't like her. Though I actually like the actress (Rekha Sharma) quite a bit. I adored her as Kali, the goddess who shoots down Dean's attempt to pick her up in Supernatural season 5's episode "Hammer of the Gods" <g>.

Yeah, not sure what character he thought he was writing but that's not Devi. Not even slightly. I also love the actress, tho. She was in "Battlestar Galactica" which was a favorite show of mine.
